The IMPACT program is a partnership between UCLA Center X Teacher Education Program, the Los Angeles Small Schools Center and the Los Angeles Unified School District is developing a network of 180 community teachers over five years and teacher leaders working in the high-need subject areas of math, science and early childhood education within a consortium of high-need yet innovative preK-12 small autonomous schools and small learning communities. UCLA IMPACT will offer a lead teacher certification program for mentor teachers, providing a career pathway to keep our best teachers where they are needed most - in classrooms having a powerful impact on our students.
UCLA IMPACT provides an opportunity for apprentice teachers to do learn by doing - both at a school site and through university coursework. Apprentices engage in summer foundational coursework followed by a year-long residency with an LAUSD Local District 4 mentor teacher, culminating in a California Preliminary Teaching Credential. The second summer of the program is spent finishing coursework and preparing for a Masters Inquiry Project. IMPACT helps apprentices secure jobs for the fall and supports them to complete their M.Ed. by December. For more information go to http://centerx.gseis.ucla.edu/teacher-education.
